The Horeb school “Colegio Horeb”
WIND’S PARTNERSHIP WITH HOREB
In 2011, WIND partnered with the Christian school Colegio Evangelico Horeb. The school was founded in 2007 by a local woman, Tabita Juana Toma de la Cruz, who understands the culture and complexity surrounding education in her community.
By 2010 enrollment had dropped to only 28 students. The school was unable to pay teachers and was on the brink of closing.
WIND came alongside Horeb and helped provide teachers with a small salary and basic materials (textbooks and desks). Over time WIND offered scholarships, started a feeding program for malnourished children, built wood burning stoves for the poorest families, and brought dental care to the area.
Today, only fifteen years later, there are close to 500 students receiving a high-quality education at HOREB. The school now offers education for preschool through high school. The dedicated teaching staff has grown from five teachers in 2011 to 28 teachers today.
HOW WIND IS INVOLVED AT HOREB
• WIND pays teachers’ salaries and provides student scholarships.
• WIND provides meals for severely malnourished students through our feeding program.
• WIND brings several teams each year to come alongside the students and staff at Horeb.
• WIND brings dental teams twice a year to provide dental care to Horeb students and their families, as well as for people from the surrounding communities.
• WIND facilitates the 21 Girls & El Camino child sponsorship programs which encourage kids to stay in school through the ninth grade.
2025 colegio Horeb overview
In the school year that runs from January through November 2025, Colegio Horeb now has all 500 students studying on one campus; no more rented buildings! Besides the three buildings with four classrooms each, temporary structures have been built to accommodate all students.
During graduation this past November, record numbers of children graduated from Kindergarten (48), 6th grade (33), and 9th grade (24). We expect 2025 to have a record number of graduates as well!
HOreb Building Project UPdate
Colegio Horeb was limited in physical space. They rented space around the community and held classes in temporary classrooms, making teaching and learning difficult. There was no common recess area for school activities, and the bathrooms were broken and filthy.
Today, thanks to the generous support of our donors, they own their own property which includes twelve classrooms, a multi-sport facility, and a recent solar installation. But the work is not finished. Learn more here.
Colegio Horeb Teaching Staff
Colegio Horeb is led by Director Tabita Toma who has a staff of 28 teachers, two of whom are missionaries from El Salvador and Guatemala. Several of the teachers are pursuing higher education to improve their teaching skills.
